Creating the Perfect Moving Checklist

Moving can be stressful, and with it comes the packing, the sorting, the labeling and then the moving inside a truck. Obviously, the moving of boxes and bringing them in and out of homes can be done through a professional service, but what about the sorting, packing and labeling? You still have to take care of that, and there is a way to make this much more easier on you.

Through the use of a moving checklist, you can not only pack, sort and label but you can ensure that everything that needs to get done for your move, is done. Never miss something, since you can check them off as you go down the list and get things done. Always consider these moving checklist to-do's when creating your list.

Creating the Moving Checklist

  • Sorting and Purging - This is when you go through each room of the home, sort through everything, get rid of things you don't want and minimize the clutter, so you're not bringing it all with you to the new place. As a tip, start in one room and work your way around the house.
  • Speak with the moving company that you're going to moving with. You want to have them ready to go on the moving day, so you're all prepared.
  • Keep a Folder - Place the important documents for the move inside it, receipts and anything else that you might need quickly, to reference or for whatever else.
  • Order Supplies - You might need bubble wrap, furniture movers and boxes. Making sure to have these is a great idea. It can help move the process faster.
  • Start Using Up Perishables - Anything that could go bad during the move i.e.: the milk, the eggs, etc., you're going to want to use up in the couple of weeks leading up to the move. This will ensure that nothing is wasted, or goes bad.
  • Begin Packing - Start your packing room by room. Make sure that everything fits nicely in the boxes, and that they are not over-packed, because you do not want them to break when being handled. Clearly label where they go, and if they are fragile.
  • Make an Overnight Box - Overnight boxes are great for those first few days when you need to access clothes, sanitary products or food. Make sure it is all clearly labeled and together. You want to keep those where you can see them, or pack your duffel bags with these items for you to move in your vehicle.
  • Keep Valuables Safe - Pack your valuables in a separate place while boxing things up. This is the bag that you want to keep with you, and this can include any sentimental items. You do not want those to get lost.
  • Do Transfers for the New Home - When you move in, you have to change school records, bank records, records for anything that might use your address, and of course, your mail. This should all be done around the time you move.
Of course, you can also add your own twist and specifics to the moving list, to make it your own since we might have left something out. However, we promise that this can make your move much smoother than without a list.

Packing Tips for Your Next Move

When it comes to packing up and moving out, you have to ensure that you’re doing things right. While a move is not the smoothest thing out there, and it can be quite stressful, you want to be happy with the outcome when it comes down to it. Through the right packing tips, you can make the move a bit less stressful.

Packing Tips for Your Move

Here are some great ideas for packing up and getting ready for the move you’re going to be making. They can make things easier, and make your move much more efficient.

  • Instead of buying a lot of bubble wrap, find towels and clothes that can be used to wrap up the breakable items that you’re packing.
  • Make sure to clearly label and close all of the boxes that you’re packing, and when labeling, put which rooms they go in. Always label the breakables as fragile.
  • Make sure to evenly place the boxes and build them up in an area where they are easily accessible for moving purposes.
  • Pack up smaller items together, and then put them in areas of importance if you’re moving over a course of a few days. You want to move the least important items to the home, or most important depending on where you’re going to be staying for this time.
  • Roll your clothes up, and then pack them together tightly. This will save you space when trying to fit everything in the box together.
  • Create a packing checklist to make packing go much smoother than if you were to not pack everything up. You want to make sure that you do not leave anything behind, and that certain items are packed together.
  • Pack a box for the first night that you’re going to be staying at the new place. You want to make sure that you can access all of the important items that you might need such as personal care items, toilet paper, cooking items and some food and blankets and pillows. Throw in a couple of games for good measure.

Of course, to make the move even more efficient and effective, hire movers that will come in and move the boxes for you. They are able to take the boxes you’ve packed up, pack them in the moving truck and bring them to the new place. You should feel good about using them in the end. Why You Should Hire Professional Movers

When moving from one home to the next, it can be a long process. It could mean you have to take time off of work to do the move. It could mean that you need to find a babysitter, or someone to watch your pets. It could mean that you’re losing out on cash, or time that you could otherwise be doing something else. However, it still stands that you have to move. So how could you make your life and move easier when you need to move?

Reasons to Hire a Professional Mover

Making your move easier, and more efficient are essentially the goals to your move. This can be done through the use of a moving company. However, what are the benefits that you’re going to be getting from a company that does this?

Here are those benefits, and reasons to hire the company.

  1. You will not have to do any of the lifting of the heavy, or the boxed items. This puts less work on your part, since you do not have to do any of the lifting or other work.
  2. You do not have to call around to ask for help from friends and family. This allows you to have a company that can handle it from start to finish, without having you pulling favors on everyone you know.
  3. You can focus on your job, the kids, the pets, switching things over and anything else that you need to focus on during the move, so it can be handled and you do not have to worry about having to move in the middle of it all.

Who wouldn’t want to have less stress, and a bit more help when it comes to moving from one place to another? You can have this, and so much more when you choose to hire a moving company that can help you with the move from start to finish.

Tips for Moving with Pets

Moving is a long process, but with the right help behind you; you never have to worry about being left behind. A moving company can take a lot of stress off your shoulders, since they can do a lot of the lifting, moving and turning that is needed. However, they cannot take care of the pets you may have to move to the new place. They might end up in the way, and you might need to consider some of these tips when it comes to moving with pets and making sure they are not forgotten in all of the stress, move and excitement.

Pets Tips

  • If possible, find someone that you know or a kennel or other animal lodging service that is able to take your pets for you. You want them to be cared for, and not in a stressful environment as you go through the move.
  • Set alarms, if you do not have someone to watch them, for every time they need to go out or be fed. This will ensure that even though it can become quite hectic, you’re not going to forget that they need something.
  • Move them to the new home first, if possible. This will get them out of the way, and give them somewhere they can settle down without having to be in the midst of the commotion. Keep them in a room in the new place.
  • Have kids occupy the pets while you pack and load everything up. You can make sure to keep them both busy, and out of the way when you choose to do this. It not only helps on both ends, but ensures that neither is going to get into any type of trouble.
  • Hire movers! You can sit back and worry about the other things that need to be handled, such as the pets and kids, since they’re doing the moving for you. You just have to do the packing, and the unpacking when you get to the new place.

Whenever you have to go through a move, it is essential that you keep it as simple as it can possibly be. This is due to the fact that sure, you have a lot on your plate but when you take the time to step back and worry about those little things, while someone takes care of the rest; it can go much smoother.

Speak with us here at The Green Truck Moving and Storage Company. We can help you move your items from A to B without a worry. Contact us today to talk about the move you’re planning on doing, and to find out how we can help!

7 Characteristics of Trustworthy Moving Companies

moving.jpg

Moving is hard enough
Without having to worry about finding a moving company you can trust - and avoiding the disreputable companies that prey on unaware customers, putting them in the frustrating situation of paying exorbitant hidden charges in order to see their belongings again. That’s why it’s so important to do the research before you trust the care and handling of a lifetime of memories to just anyone. Do not be afraid to ask key questions. You’ll be glad you did later. Your thorough inquiry in the interim can save you from much frustration, heartache and expense later. Here is a list of the 7 Characteristics of Trustworthy Moving Companies:

1) They are experienced and established in their community.
Look for press and posted references and reviews from past customers. Is there positive buzz among former customers? Every company has a dissatisfied customer from time to time. It’s virtually the price of doing business. Is there evidence that they reached out and did their best to resolve the matter swiftly, respectfully and satisfactorily? Check with their local BBB.

2) They are they licensed and insured.
For state to state moves, the moving company should have a US DOT number, a unique license number issued by the United States Department of Transportation. You can search for this HERE. Within the state, a state license should be in place. Next, confirm that they are insured at the same site as before, HERE.

3) They have they won customer and/or community service awards or accolades.
This could be anything from Angie’s List to commendations from local schools. If they care about investing in their customers and their community and it shows, this is a company you can likely feel good about trusting.

4) They clearly communicate the what is covered in their rates.
There should be no mystery here. Different companies have different policies. Is it an hourly rate or a move quote? How firm is the estimated hourly or move quote? Do they add overtime charges at a certain point? What about other penalty charges? Are fuel charges included in the quote or additional?

5)  They offer special service  perks
Things like carefully wrapping your furniture to protect it from damages, complimentary moving blankets and supports, furniture tear down and set up, and any special savings opportunities like referral discounts, special savings offers or more affordable days of the week to book your move.

6)  They measure doorways, stairways, hallways and elevators in advance
Rather than the incorporating the time-honored technique of poor movers everywhere, the “hope-shove”.

7) They have questions for YOU!
An experienced mover will ask a range of questions in order to be ready with necessary preparations that ensure your moving experience is a great one, like whether or not an apartment building or condo has elevators. An eager estimate without any questions is a clear red flag. Your communications with them should clearly confirm that they are a service dedicated company.

Communication is key
In the end, clear, thorough communication from both the moving company and the party being moved is key for the most successful move possible. Moving is by nature stressful, but at The Green Truck Movers of Nashville, we take great pride in making our customers’ moves the most positive, stress-free experience possible.

Extraordinary Customer Service
We make it our mission to provide extraordinary to provide extraordinary customer service as well as moving services. Furniture breakdowns (beds, dressers, etc.), secure wrapping with furniture pads, and rearranging of rooms upon unloading is complimentary with every move! 5 Tips to a Relaxing First Night In Your New Home

1st night new home.jpg Your first night in your new home!
It’s hard to tell whether whether you’re more physically or emotionally exhausted. One’s thing’s for sure: it’s time for a little rest and rejuvenation. Moving may be hard work, but it’s also an adventure, and one you’ll probably remember for the rest of your lives. At Green Truck Movers, we love making your move as easy as possible. Here are some of our favorite first night moving tips to ensure that with a little advance planning, your first night moving adventure will be a memory you’ll enjoy revisiting.

Did someone say delivery?
Unless cooking is your personal passion, leave the cooking to someone else! Sure, you could probably find your pots and pans eventually somewhere amidst the fray, but is it really worth the added congestion and frustration? Besides, you’re probably already hungry. Pre-move, do a quick investigation of your new neighborhood for  local eateries that deliver, and be sure to check their hours. There’s nothing worse than looking forward to a relaxing meal delivered to your door after a long hard day of work, only to discover that the last restaurant in your area has already closed down for the night.

Essentials kit
What are those items that you and your family can’t live without? It’s the everyday important things like toothbrushes, utensils and fresh clothes, but it’s also those little things that soothe weary minds, like Mr. Bunny, or your favorite cozy slippers. Making a list and checking it twice is a sure way to make your first night as comfortable as possible - not to mention circumventing  meltdowns from the littlest members of the family.

Plan for entertainment
Whether it’s movie night, charades, or your favorite board games, this is another area where a little advance planning goes a long way. You probably don’t have the cable or internet set up yet. Is there another option, like a portable hotspot, or will you need to pack dvds? Nothing like making your first night a family bonding night that everyone will enjoy.

Mini tour
You’re probably too tired to go out, but still, a nice little walk around the block to begin soaking in the new sights and sounds may be just what the doctor ordered. What are you looking forward to exploring first: that cute little coffee shop with the massive library, the historic park just down the street at the river, or maybe even getting acquainted with the uber friendly black lab belonging to the neighbor across the street who ran out to greet you? Taking a few minutes to drink in the atmosphere, get your bearings, and make mental notes can be very therapeutic.

Rest well  - you deserve it!
After all that hard work, don’t forget to exhale! Now, go get those fluffy slippers we talked about, slip into a nice bubbly bath followed by your most comfortable sweats. You’ve already got the kids engrossed in a movie and they’re about ready to crash. You did it! This calls for a toast. Planning for a celebratory treat like champagne or sparkling cider is a great way to christen your new home and congratulate yourself on a job well done. There. Now doesn’t that feel better?

“Bearing Fruit” at East Nashville’s Martha O’Bryan Center

green truck movers.jpg
By now you may be familiar with The Green Truck’s commitment to being a responsible citizen, both globally and locally. Giving back to the community is a core value and as such, The Green Truck has been steadily working to make a difference in our Nashville community through eco-friendly efforts and public service. Since it’s inception in April of 2010, they have followed through on their pledge to plant two trees after every move.

The Green Truck regularly visits at least two Nashville Metro schools each month to do a tree planting ceremony. The visit is an opportunity to educate elementary kids in grades 1st through 4th about the many benefits of planting trees and living eco-friendly lifestyles.

A Few of the Many Benefits of Planting Trees
  • Trees help fight crime
  • Trees give us creative ideas
  • Trees help eliminate stress
  • Trees provide healthy snacks
  • Trees create homes for birds and wildlife
  • Trees provide shelter from the elements
  • Trees help prevent erosion
  • Trees are great for swings

In the picture above, we see Green Truck President Derrick Moore checking on the progress of a number of Peach Trees planted at the Martha O'Bryan Center in the East Nashville neighborhood about 3 years ago. He says, “We are proud to report that they are now feeding the neighborhood!” It’s a good feeling.

Today, The Green Truck Moving & Storage Company has planted over 5000 trees combined, both locally and in third world countries. Their partnerships with Trees for the Future and The Tennessee Environmental Council have helped make all of us possible. Green Truck puts the Green Initiative at the heart of their business - in fact, many would call the way they approach their business “leading from heart”.

The Green Truck Movers loves meeting and working with the people of Middle Tennessee. Giving back to the community is just one way they express their gratitude. For more information or to schedule your move with The Green Truck Movers, click here or call (615) 241-5977.
